Arkansas EFA: You Must Apply or Renew Every Year. Don't Miss the Window
By My Learning Source · October 12, 2026 · Scholarships, Tips
Let me say this as plainly as I can. The Arkansas Education Freedom Account is not a set-it-and-forget-it deal. You apply or renew every year, for every participating student. Miss it, and you can't blame anybody but the calendar.

The Rule, No Wiggle Room
The Arkansas Department of Education's Office of School Choice and Parent Empowerment runs the program. Its rule is simple: every year, every child. Got three kids on EFA? That's three students you're responsible for renewing. Not one household checkbox.
Applications and renewals go through FACTS. For the 2026–27 school year, the window ran March 9 through June 1, 2026.
What Happens If You're Late?
Here's the part that should get your attention. ADE says applications submitted after June 29, 2026 may be considered later only as funding allows. No guarantee. None.
Think about what that means. The 2026–27 amount is $7,208 per student, or $8,011 for Succeed Scholarship students. That's a lot of money to leave sitting on a maybe because you didn't log in during a three-month window.
Meet Dana, a homeschool mom in Fort Smith with three kids. She renewed her oldest in April and figured she was done. In the last week of May, she was double-checking her FACTS account and realized the renewals for her two younger kids were never finished. She finished them before June 1. Close call. She now blocks off one evening in March, sits down, and renews every child in one sitting.
(A composite example — names and details are illustrative, drawn from situations homeschool families commonly describe.)
Testing Ties Into Renewal Too
Renewal isn't just a form. For homeschooled EFA students in grades K–10 during 2025–26, keeping eligibility for 2026–27 required a reading and math test on an approved assessment, taken between March 1 and June 30, 2026, with results submitted to ADE by June 30, 2026.
See how those dates overlap with the application window? Spring is crunch time. Renewal and testing land in the same season. Families who wait until the last minute on both are asking for trouble. Check the testing page for the current year's window before you plan anything.
Why Every Year?
So why the hassle? Because it's public money, and the state wants to know who's still in, every year. You can grumble about it or you can build it into your routine. The families who do well with the EFA don't grumble. They schedule.
Here is the practical fix. Pick one evening early in the window. Log in to FACTS. Renew every child. Then log back in a few days later and confirm each one shows as complete. Twenty minutes of double-checking beats a summer of worry.
And what about next year? Don't assume the 2027–28 window matches the 2026–27 dates. Check ADE for exact dates as they're announced.
The Bottom Line
No renewal, no guarantee. Treat the window like a tax deadline, because in dollars, it's in the same neighborhood.
- Check ADE for the next application and renewal window as soon as it's announced.
- Renew every participating child, and confirm each one is complete in FACTS.
- Schedule your child's approved reading and math test early in the testing window if your child is in a tested grade.
- Submit test results before the deadline listed on the current testing page.
